Health classes explained

Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard—understanding these labels and what factors move you between them.

Carriers structure term life using rate classes. While naming varies slightly between companies, the structure stays consistent: Preferred Plus (sometimes Super Preferred or Preferred Best), Preferred, Standard Plus, and Standard, followed by additional pricing tiers for higher-risk cases. Tobacco users face a separate, higher rate schedule.

What underwriters look at

Your build (height and weight), blood pressure, cholesterol numbers, family medical history (particularly heart disease or cancer before age 60), driving history, medication history, line of work and hobbies, and tobacco or nicotine use. A Preferred Plus class demands excellent results across nearly all categories; Preferred allows some flexibility; Standard Plus and Standard allow managed conditions like controlled hypertension.

How to use the quote tool

When asked about your health, respond truthfully: Excellent corresponds with Preferred Plus, Very good with Preferred, Good with Standard Plus, and Average with Standard. Your quoted rates reflect this classification; the underwriter sets your actual class after review. Try quoting two different classes to compare if you're uncertain; let the application process determine your final placement. Overstating your health doesn't lower your premium; it just produces a less accurate quote.

Susman Insurance Agency can guide you to carriers whose standards are particularly favorable for your specific circumstances, which often matters more than the published starting rates.
